01 ·The Synthesis

Midjourney remains the reference point for AI image aesthetics. Where competing tools chase instruction-following and pixel control, Midjourney optimizes for images that look deliberate — lighting, composition, and colour handled the way an art director would handle them. That is why it stays the default for concept art, editorial illustration, moodboards, and anything where the look carries more weight than exact reproduction.

The workflow has two faces. Discord remains the original home and the fastest route to new models and community features; the web app is friendlier for browsing, organizing, and iterating on a library. Either way the interface is deliberately narrow: you prompt, you get a grid, you upscale, vary, or refine. Style references, character references, and image prompts extend control meaningfully, but there is no layer-based editor and no precise regional editing.

That narrowness is the honest tradeoff. If you need a product photographed at an exact angle with a legible label, a diffusion tool with masking and inpainting will beat it. Midjourney is also subscription-only with no general free tier, so evaluating it means paying in. Lower tiers cap GPU time; higher tiers add generation capacity and, importantly, privacy controls that keep your prompts and images out of public galleries — a detail that decides the question for client work.

Prompt craft carries a real learning curve. Very short prompts underperform noticeably, and the people who get the most from it treat prompting as a vocabulary they build over months. Results also shift between model versions, so a workflow tuned to one release may need retuning after an update.

Best for artists, designers, and creative teams who want the strongest default aesthetic. Not for teams needing precise photoreal control, exact text rendering, or API-first automation. If the work is commercial, confirm the privacy tier before uploading anything sensitive.
