Anthropic's reasoning-first AI for complex coding and analysis.

Quick verdict

A strong reasoning and coding assistant with Free, Pro, and Max individual plans; Claude Code and Cowork are included with paid individual plans, while API usage is billed separately.

01 ·The Synthesis

Claude is built around reasoning and long-form work, and that shows most clearly in coding and analysis. It handles large amounts of context well, follows detailed instructions closely, and tends to be measured about uncertainty rather than filling gaps with confident invention — a difference that matters when you are working through a complex problem rather than generating copy.

For developers, the appeal is codebase understanding. Given a large body of code, Claude can hold the structure in view and reason about how a change ripples outward, which makes it strong for refactors, debugging, and explaining unfamiliar systems. Artifacts render code and documents inline, so you can iterate on something runnable without leaving the conversation.

The practical caveats are worth knowing up front. There is no first-party IDE agent of its own, so editor-native workflows come through third-party integrations. Sustained heavy use runs into usage limits: the free tier is genuinely usable but capped, Pro is the standard individual tier, and Max exists for people who hit limits constantly. API usage is billed separately from chat subscriptions, which surprises teams that assume one covers the other.

Where it fits best is work that rewards patience — reviewing a design, tracing a bug through several layers, drafting a long document that has to stay coherent from start to finish, or pressure-testing an argument before it goes anywhere public. Where it fits less well is rapid-fire short tasks, where any competent assistant would do and speed matters more than depth.

A practical way to use it well: give it the whole problem rather than a fragment. Paste the full file, the error, and what you have already tried; the measured reasoning that makes it useful only engages when it has enough to reason about. For long documents, asking for a critique of your draft produces more than asking for a draft, since its strength lies in pressure-testing an argument rather than inventing one.

Best for complex coding and reasoning at the frontier, and for long documents that need to stay consistent. Not for teams that want a built-in editor agent out of the box.
