Open-source platform for building and running autonomous AI agents.

Quick verdict

A much more mature agent platform than its early experimental reputation suggests, with a genuinely free self-hosted path and a paid managed cloud for visual, scheduled, and integrated automation.

01 ·The Synthesis

AutoGPT is one of the more unfairly judged tools in this category. Its reputation was set by the early viral experiment — an autonomous agent that ran off the rails and burned API credits — but the platform that exists now is a considerably more sober product: a visual and chat-based builder for agents that run on schedules or triggers, with integrations, a marketplace, and visibility into what each run actually did.

That maturity is the point. Agents here are meant to be repeatable automations rather than one-off stunts: pull data, summarize, post, notify, repeat on a schedule. Being able to see the steps of a run and diagnose where it went wrong is what separates something you can rely on from something you can only demo.

The two paths matter for cost. Self-hosting the open-source platform is genuinely free, apart from your own infrastructure and the model API keys you supply — the right route for technical users who want control and do not mind setup. The managed cloud has no free tier and runs on pay-as-you-go credits per execution, which is convenient but means cost tracks how much your agents actually do.

The discipline it requires is the same as any agent platform: scope tasks clearly, keep a human on anything consequential, and expect to iterate before an agent is dependable. Autonomy is improving fast, but unsupervised decisions in high-stakes settings remain a bad idea.

A practical way to start: build one narrow automation you already do by hand, run it for a fortnight, and watch the logs. That teaches you where agents break — usually on inputs messier than expected — without risking anything important. Self-hosting is the cheaper route for anyone comfortable with infrastructure, but the managed cloud earns its cost if you would rather spend the time on the workflow than on the servers.

Best for technical users and teams building repeatable AI-agent automations. Not for high-stakes autonomous decisions without human review, or for non-technical users wanting a fully managed product with no setup.
