What is AI automation?
AI automation is the use of artificial intelligence to carry out tasks and workflows with minimal human involvement — not just answering questions, but taking actions. It typically combines AI (to understand and decide) with traditional automation (to execute steps).
How it differs from traditional automation
Traditional automation — including robotic process automation (RPA) — follows fixed rules: "when X happens, do Y." It breaks when the input changes shape. AI automation can handle variation: reading an unstructured email, extracting the relevant details, and routing the work accordingly. That flexibility lets it cover tasks that rules-based automation never could.
Common use cases
- Document processing — extracting data from invoices, contracts, and forms.
- Customer workflows — resolving support tickets end-to-end or escalating intelligently.
- Sales & marketing — research, outreach, and follow-up sequences.
- IT & operations — incident response, provisioning, and routine maintenance.
The benefits and the guardrails
AI automation can save significant time and let teams scale without scaling headcount. But because these systems act, not just advise, they need guardrails: human approval for high-stakes actions, clear logs of what was done, and well-defined limits so an autonomous workflow can't cause real damage if it misjudges.
